Violinist Katie Ding is the winner of the 2023 Lorraine C. Lippert Young Artist Concerto Competition.  She will perform the Allegro Moderato movement of Haydn’s Violin Concerto No. 2, Hob VII a:4 with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic at 4pm on Sunday, May 19, 2024. 

The Young Artist Concerto Competition is open to high school musicians performing on harp, strings, brass, or woodwinds. Applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 19 and must be residents of Allegheny, Butler, Beaver, Washington, or Westmoreland counties. All applicants are required to submit a CD recording of one movement of a standard concerto to the Philharmonic. Finalists selected then appear in person before an Audition Panel and that group selects the winner of the competition.

Katie Ding is a sophomore at Mt. Lebanon High School. She began her musical journey at the age of 8, taking violin lessons with Mr. Huan Zhu and Mr. Richard DiAdamo. Katie, now 15, has been studying with Ms. Irene Cheng since 2021. As well as being the winner of the 2023 Young Artist Concerto Competition, Katie also won 3rd place at the 2024 PYCO Youth String Competition.
Katie’s passion for music extends beyond the violin; she is also an accomplished pianist, having studied with Mr. Jimmy Liu since 3rd grade. and has earned an ABRSM Grade 8 distinction in piano. She is also a member of the Steinway Society of Western Pennsylvania, and has enjoyed the opportunity for many solo performances.
Katie is currently a member of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra and was also a member of the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association orchestras, and the Mt. Lebanon High School orchestra.
Outside of music, Katie enjoys other activities such as fencing, watching Youtube videos, and coding.
